Battle for Beck's Sponsors

Conservatives who are traditionally not accustomed to attending protest rallies except for perhaps anti-abortion rallies, are getting more organized by the day. It all started with the TEA Parties. Next came David Letterman's asinine comments about Sarah Palin's daughter. This sparked letter writing and phone campaigns to Letterman's sponsors. Conservatives were successful in getting a few advertisers to drop sponsorship of his program. Conservative efforts culminated in an actual "Fire David Letterman" protest outside of the Ed Sullivan theater. The protest came after Letterman had already faced his viewers with tail between his legs to make a second apology to appease Palin and her conservative base. While he has made Palin jokes since, he seems to have gotten the message that sexual jokes about her daughters, regardless of which one he's joking about, are off limits.

Now in a reversal of roles, conservatives are sending emails and making phone calls to past and present sponsors of Glenn Beck's television program in an attempt to get them to NOT drop sponsorship of his program. Glenn has taken a significant hit from an advertising standpoint, but it may end up being the sponsors who've dropped him that take the biggest monetary hit in the long run.

The effort against Beck which is being spearheaded by Color of Change, a group founded by Obama's Green Job's Czar Van Jones, was said to be triggered by remarks Beck made admitting that he (Beck) thinks the President is a racist.

Many are now wondering aloud whether the group is targeting Beck because of this comment about Obama or because they're upset that Beck, in a recent program, exposed their founder's (Van Jones) relationship with a former member of the Weather Underground.

Ultimately the decisions by Beck's corporate sponsors, who are unfairly being caught in the middle, will boil down to whether they sell more products and services to liberals or conservatives. Progressive, Geico, and State Farm Insurance might ultimately have regrets about their decision. Sargento Cheese and Men's Wearhouse might have second thoughts as well. Conservatives are reportedly working hard to convince ADT and Broadview (formerly Brinks) Security not to drop Beck while liberals are trying to convince Clorox Bleach that it's time to tell Beck so long. Both will probably be successful in their efforts. I can just hear the conservatives calling ADT or Broadview. "Hey, we conservatives use your products and services to keep liberals out of our homes!" Meanwhile, liberals will be trying to convince Clorox that they sell far more bleach to liberal intravenous drug users who use Clorox to sterilize needles   than they sell to conservatives who merely use the product for washing clothes. Conservatives will no doubt counter that Clorox is the secret to KKK members always having sheets that look so nice and white. Honestly, what's a sponsor to do?

While it's hard to predict if conservatives will successfully convince former Glenn Beck advertisers to jump back on board, they've at least done enough to help him keep his job. One prediction that is easy to make is that conservatives will continue to get louder and more organized with each day that passes between now and 2012. Significant republican gains in 2010 will only add fuel to the fire.

As for some of the other sponsors, Lysol, Golden Coral, Pep Boys, and Super 8 Motels will probably jump ship and leave Beck. It's a safe bet that Scottrade, AARP, Mercedes-Benz and Avadart will stay where they are.
